چکیده

Extended research in recent years has unveiled a plethora of uses of loads as demand response resources. This thesis focuses on the use of thermal loads as frequency reserves, under the current frequency control setup of power systems. In the proposed methods loads can be utilized in parallel to conventional spinning reserves. Most of the literature usually neglects practical load constraints or large assumptions are made to simplify the analysis and modeling. In this thesis various constraints are addressed, such as anti short-cycling compressor timers, ramping constraints, start-up dynamics etc. Their impact on the loads’ response is thoroughly analyzed and control methods are proposed to improve performance. The resulting algorithms can be applied under realistic loads, with simulations showing very promising results. The good performance of the models was validated by dynamics simulations in a two-area power system. From the investigation it can be concluded that spinning reserves can be reliably replaced by thermal loads, significantly improving the system’s stability under large disturbances.

On the Feasibility of Providing Power System Spinning Reserves from Thermal Storage

As power systems integrate more intermittent renewable generation, and as extreme weather events become more frequent with climate change, power systems are likely to require increasing amounts of spinning reserves in order to maintain reliable operation. While traditionally spinning reserves have been supplied by generators, demand-side resources can also provide reserves by increasing or decr...

Frequency Control of Microgrids by Demand Response

This paper investigates the use of electricity demand response as a new measure for fast reserves inside of an autonomous (islanded) microgrid during different operating conditions including frequency controlled disturbance and normal ones. It is worth noting that demand response programs using under-frequency relays to shed the loads is used in the past, but these programs have, however, mainl...

Robust Reserve Provision by Commercial Buildings Considering Energy-Constrained Frequency Signals

It has been shown that the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of commercial buildings can offer ancillary services to power systems due to their large thermal inertia. In this paper, we propose a new control framework for scheduling and provision of frequency reserves by commercial building aggregations. The framework builds on a hierarchical control scheme: first, the re...

EFFICIENT NUMERICAL DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF TENSION LEG PLATFORMS UNDER SEA WAVE LOADS

However it is possible to use of numerical methods such as beta-Newmark in order to investigate the structural response behavior of the dynamic systems under random sea wave loads but because of necessity to analysis the offshore systems for extensive time to fatigue study it is important to use of simple stable methods for numerical integration. The modified Euler method (MEM) is a simple nume...

Vibration analysis of functionally graded cylindrical shells with different boundary conditions subjected to thermal loads

In the present work, study of the vibration of a functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shell made up of stainless steel, zirconia, and nickel is presented. Free vibration analysis is presented for FG cylindrical shells with simply supported-simply supported and clamped–clamped boundary condition based on temperature independent material properties. The equations of motion are derived by Hamilton...
